Diplomats from 19 countries have been invited to a networking event in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, featuring activities spanning culture, tourism and industry.

The event, jointly hosted by The Korea Herald and the Chungju Culture and Tourism Foundation, is being held Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of Visit Chungju Year 2027.

The ambassadors represent countries across Asia, Europe, Africa and South America and will be accompanied by diplomatic officials and their families.

Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is also scheduled to appear.

During the trip, participants will tour key industrial sites that use cutting-edge artificial intelligence and robotics as well as cultural destinations.

The foundation and the Chungju city government said the event would strengthen ties among the diplomats while introducing the city to an international audience.

"It is very meaningful to host the diplomats from 19 countries ahead of the Visit Chungju Year 2027. ... We hope that this event will show the world the charm of Chungju — combining cutting-edge technology, traditional culture and local culinary culture — acting as a catalyst as the city propels itself as a hub city for global K-culture," a Chungju official said.

Chungju has been working to encourage longer stays by combining accommodation, events and local attractions. City officials have been coordinating efforts across tourism, culture, arts and food.

Mayor Lee Dong-seok on Sept. 15 met with representatives of Yanolja, one of the country’s largest travel platforms, to discuss ways to promote tourism and develop infrastructure for "smart tourism," which uses technology to enhance the travel experience.
